Going on an Arctic Safari

Arctic LandscapesAnother northern adventure awaits….

Tomorrow, I meet the other staff and passengers of Adventure Canada’s Arctic Safari cruise. We fly out early Monday morning (from Ottawa) for Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island in the High Central Arctic. There, we’ll embark on the Ocean Endeavour for an 11-day voyage east through Lancaster Sound, stopping at incredible places on Devon and Baffin islands en route to Greenland.

I’m really looking forward to meeting expedition friends again, and making new acquaintances. And… I am super excited to visit/revisit breathtaking, incredible places. Beechey Island is one of them. This will be the earliest time of year that I’ll have stopped there,  so I don’t anticipate any snow. Franklin’s cenotaph will look different without it.

Monday’s weather forecast for nearby Resolute is 5˚C.  –However, heat warning here in Ottawa today.

The next blog posts likely won’t be until after I return August 18, as Internet on the ship is sketchy.

About Season Osborne

I am a writer with a love of Arctic history. After finding a photo of Capt. Joseph-Elzéar Bernier, who claimed the Arctic for Canada in 1909, I was inspired to write my master’s thesis on Bernier’s contribution to Arctic sovereignty. This ultimately led to extensive research into Canadian and ‘foreign’ expeditions to the North, which morphed into my recent book, In the Shadow of the Pole: An Early History of Arctic Expeditions, 1871-1912.
